Mk 5 Passat wagon will not reverse from a cold start

Asked by Jul 05, 2017 at 09:34 AM about the 2005 Volkswagen Passat

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2005 Passat wagon TDI

Vehicle will not engage in reverse after sitting over night or not being driven
for a few hours.

The engine will rev and seems to be getting power but will not move.

After driving for  a few minutes my car will shift into reverse and work.  There
is a slight hesitation and a clunking noise, then reverses smoothly.

Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated

Thank you
