They won't bypass it but they can get you a new key if that is what you need. The computer has security features built in and only the factory knows how to fix your issue.

Replacing a VATs key is not that difficult, can't you get another key or keys? You can replace the VATs ignition lock cylinder too, along with matching keys.

The most troublesome part of the VATS (Vehicle Anti-Theft System) system is the ignition lock cylinder. There's two tiny wires that contact the visible chip on the ignition key. This tells the computer that the correct key is being used. These tiny wires wear and break over time causing the connection to be lost and the computer to not allow the engine to be started. The new ignition lock cylinder comes with a template for cutting new keys. BUT the correct number VATS ignition key must be used. There were 15 possibilities. Your local GM Dealer may still have an "interrogator" machine to determine which number key you have. If not, there's other ways to figure it out which they may or may not still know. F O R is correct in that they can't bypass the security system. Even with proof of ownership. BUT talk to the service writer at your local GM Dealer before letting them do the repairs. This is an old system now and they may not still have anyone who is still familiar with it. You may wind up going to a locksmith. At least for the keys. Again, pick an older locksmith who's been in business at least 20 years and will probably be familiar with the security system on your Oldsmobile. Whatever you do, DON'T let some 18 to 20 year old "tech" near it!! They'll have absolutely no idea of what they're looking at and most likely will do more harm than good!! HTH. -Jim
