changed engine car now surges when hot idles between 1000 and 1500

can any one hellp my engine disintigrated on the motorway so I put another one in but cant get it running propperly surges when hot sometimes idles at 2000 rpm how do I set the idle and stop it from surging

Did you check the engine temp sensor ? I would start there
