He would be better off taking it to a shop he trusts and have it checked out and fix what is really wrong instead of just guessing and throwing parts on it in hope that it cures the problem, it may not even be a sensor problem.

I had one in my shop that was doing something like that, found it was a bad ground going to the throttle body's ISC motor. It would idle but not pickup slightly when it was put in gear.
