My husbands 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 left rear wheel was very hot to the touch today when I aired up the tire, espeially in the enter of the rim. Thoughts?

I aired up the left rear tire on my 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 and noticed the rim and especially the center were extremely hot to touch. Thoughts as to what Im facing?

Thanks for the help. One more question while I have you here: If the bearings are shot, will that cause the wheel to come off?

Yes,if bearing burns grease out,it will lock up and snap off the shaft and tire will come off.

If you drove a long distance with a very under-inflated tire, heat can be generated. Driving on under-inflated tires, especially when the weather is hot, is very hard on the tire sidewall and can cause tire failure. Also check the parking brake to see if it was partially engaged while driving as that will also generate lots of heat. Perhaps it is time to get your vehicle to a shop and have them evaluate the wheel, bearing and axle assembly for possible issues.
