Your build sheet on the glove box door should tell, if not, the tranny that came with the pickup will be listed in any self serve maintenance manual or online search. If you're not an auto tranny guru, it's best to take it to a reputable repair facility, bite the bullet n let them fix it and have any upgrades/updates done. If you remove the cost cutting measures during design, heat is usually what still destroys an automatic. When/if you get it rebuilt, get a separate tranny oil cooler apart from the radiator(if it doesn't have one already) and use only synthetic fluid.

3 different choices for transmissions in 1999. Stop by your local Dodge dealer's parts department armed with your VIN number and they should be able to tell you which transmission is in your Dodge.
