99 Dodge 1500 transmission over drive

Asked by Jan 30, 2018 at 08:21 AM about the 1999 Dodge Ram 1500

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My truck has a hesitation in
overdrive. Shifts fine in all gears.
When it goes into overdrive  it
feels like engine in missing.but at
same rpm with overdrive off it
doesn't do it. Thanks for any help

As it only happens in overdrive it could be torque converter shutter, try adding some Shutter Stop from your local parts store. It could be actually missing, one cylinder could be leaning out, it could also be a weak spark plug breaking down under the load the overdrive adds. Any codes?

No check engine light. Just replaced plugs wires rotor button dis cap and coil.when adding shutter stop do you have to remove any tranny fluid. Or does it not matter

That amount won't matter at all, usually takes a day or two for it to get all mixed in and working.

Is there any particular brand that's better

Lubeguard Dr. Tranny is what I have always used. It comes in a little red tube.

Thanks appreciate it a alot

Hope it does the trick, it's good stuff even if it doesn't help the shutter it helps the seals of older trannies so you don't need to worry about changing the fluid if it doesn't work, but every transmission I have put it in that had a converter shutter it was gone in no longer than three days of normal driving, but you do have to use the overdrive and put up with the shutter for a little while.

no big deal I've been putting up with it for 6 months and I really don't have a long commute back and forth to work so I put up with it this long I can handle another couple days
