2000 Dodge Ram 1500 V8 4x4 gear shift problems

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

During the winter when I put my truck in 4wd, it started slipping back into 2wd several times while I was driving.  I kept having to put it back in.  After parking it.  I noticed it was very hard to move the gear shift.  I tried to put it through the gears, i.e., 4x4H to 4x4L and couldn't move it.  So I shoved it hard with my foot and it finally moved into 4x4 L.  Then I put it into 2wd and can drive in 2wd, but before I take it to the repair shop, I want to know what is wrong with it.  Has it lost its lubrication or is something broken inside?

Lubrication is something to check ! Dodges had recalls on their transfer cases mine did same thing but not as bad as yours mine wouldnt want to come out of 4 whl drive.I just use mine more often been fine knock on wood

check linkage to the transfer case from the selector if its on the floor... mine bent due to someone forgetting to reconnect vacuum lines to transfer case and had to retightebn bolt up.
