Damage can happen very quickly when you loose oil pressure, I know what he's thinking, if he just replaces the oil pump gets all back together and the oil pressure is still gone then he has to tear it all back down again. With that kind of mileage and an oil pressure drop out you most likely need another engine, new, rebuilt, crate or even used, if your going to keep it till it rusts into the ground then I would put in a new one, of course you could always sell it as is where is.
