96 Buick century

The temp gauge will go all the over then will go
back down but yesterday it went all the way to the
hot but didn't run hot

With some makes and models, there is one sending unit for the temp gage and another that sends signal to the computer for engine temp. The one for the temp gage is a one wire connector. Probably on back side of engine, driver side, You should be able to reach it. The other may be in thermostat housing or close to it, two wire connector. The problem may not be sending unit, maybe a problem with wiring circuit or gage on the dash?
