new starter/solenoid. starter always turns but sometimes missfires(does not engage flyweel)

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just replaced the starter motor and solenoid in my 1991 ford f150 5.8lt 351 windsor automatic. Most of the time the starter will fire and engage the flywheel and the truck will start but every once in a while the starter seems to turn but missfires and doesnt engage the flywheel. I normally wait a few secs and try it again and it usually works fine again. The same thing was happening with the previous starter and thats why i replaced it. No idea where to go from here. Any suggestions?

Two possibilities. Wrong gear on the new starter or there could be some broken cogs on the flywheel. Try placing the vehicle in drive and push it forward a couple of feet. If it spins normally, you may have a broken cog or two on the flywheel.

Additional info. The MAF sends a signal to the PCM regarding incoming air. The info is used by the PCM to regulate the air fuel mixture so the engine operates at maximum efficiency. Make sure air filter is not blocked. It shounds like the PCM signal from the MAF is causing the engine to fail. Check the net for further info on how to troubleshoot.
