Why is our 94 F-150 stuck in park

Asked by Michigant Feb 21, 2016 at 05:33 PM about the 1994 Ford F-150

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Our 94 F-150 with a 302 & 4 speed automatic stuck in park yesterday. I've found by disconnecting the battery I can move the shift lever to all positions. Reconnect the battery and the shift lever locks. Brake lights are inoperable. Brake fuse is good and brake light bulbs are good. I considered replacing the neutral safety switch thinking it was defective and the cause. Parts store employee advised this is common with Ford products and there is a recall. Does anyone know how to diagnose this or is it a job for the Ford dealership?

Could also be the brake pedal switch. Specially with those lights not working too

Found a defective brake lite fuse. We now need to locate the short or determine if the fuse simply died because of age. it looks to be the original fuse.
