What is the voltage at the battery with the engine running? This needs to be measured and not read off of a gauge. If it is 13.8 to 14.6 volts plus or minus a few tenths the alternator is doing it's job. I would look at the battery, alternator and battery cables very closely.

It sounds like a weak battery or corroded connections. 12 volts is good but it's amps that matter and can only be determined with a load test

Even though the cable looks good at the battery, check the connection at the starter. I have seen many starter cables have strands that fray and break until only 2-3 strands remain. Might be as simple as a new cable. How did you trouble shoot this to begin with. Any meters?
