While changing the alternator, the mechanic must have disconnected the battery and interrupted the current flow to the radio. The radio, or possibly something else, detects it has been removed or stolen from the car. The four digit code would have been included in the owners manual but on a thirteen year old car, I'm sure it has already gotten lost a long time ago. The mechanic should have hooked up a backup current while doing the repair. Let him know it so he car correct it. A BMW dealer can help you but bring $$$.
