x5 does not start sometimes...any ideas whY?

I have a 2001 x5 that occasionally will not start. the engine turns over, but then the rpms just drop and the car shuts off. since it does not happen all the time it is hard to diagnose at the mechanics. Has anyone had this problem before? Or have any ideas about what it could be? thanks!

bad crak senser-stoped up fuel filter-fuel pump going bad.just a few thatcomes to mind.also none of this would show up on a scan.i would go with filter and crank senser first.
