1966 thunderbird unleaded pumps click off immediately

Asked by GuruLYM73 Mar 27, 2019 at 09:08 AM about the 1966 Ford Thunderbird

Question type: General

When I try to fill the gas tank the unleaded pump will only run for a second.  Is
there some adapter that will allow the gas pump to run continuously or is this a
problem in the filler tube; it runs straight horizontally too far to get the curved
pump handle fully inserted.

I’ve heard this a lot from old school car owners, it has to do with the way the nozzle fits in the filler tube and the air flow back out of the inlet. No real way to fix it, short of redesigning the fuel tank and inlet system, have heard some people have just experimented with different nozzle positions and using the slower settings and have had better results. Sorry
