It is possible that the voltage regulator is stuck and bad causing the light to stay on.

This was a problem with a lot of cars back then. Generators and Voltage regulators were the norm. The voltage regulator has contacts and they would fuse together or sometimes just stick which would make the charging light come on.

Thanks guys for your response, how ever I replaced the VR and the generator light comes on only when I shut the ignition switch off. Is there a low voltage wire that sends a signal from the generator triggering a gen light to come when not on and the opposite when it is. ?

The only thing that comes to mind would be a bad/corroded/loose connection in the circuit or a low resistance short.
