I have several questions: 1) What were some of the most common mechanical problems aqssociated with the 1970 Ford Country Squire and 2) how big was it's cargo area -- seats up and down?
Most of them used a fiber timing gear in the engine (351W for sure), that should be replaced immediately to avoid it coming apart while the motor is running and destroying valves and pistons. If it has power vent windows, be sure to re-glue them to the chrome strip before they fall apart.
fuel pump going bad,timeing gears ,chain wearing out,jumping time,dont worrie,it will not bend or break pistons or valves,really just regular wear and tear,they were good cars up to 100,000 miles,then time for a motor rebuild,not like todays cars that are still running with 400,000 miles on them,cargo area,seats up,6 feet,seats down,10 feet.but dont hold me to this cargo leingth,im sure this is close.
Ford Y Block, FE, Windsor, 385 Big blocks, and all diesel engines were all interference motors back then and will bend valves and possibly damage pistons if the timing gears or chain breaks while the motor is running. This data is from several generations of mechanics, first hand experience (1970 351W had plastic/fiber gears, they broke at 55MPH and destroyed valves and dented pistons), also Ford Motor Company data. But don't take my word for it, look it up on the internet, the information is readily available.
