It depends on what system you have. Lever with manual hubs or electronic with automatic hubs. The manual is straight forward, lock in the front hubs an pit the transfer case lever in what ever mode you are going to run it in. The electronic you just push the mode button and when the drive motor completes the shift it will automatically engage the front hubs. The lever activated transfer case rarely has many shifting problems until it get some wear on it, the electronic unit can have all kinds of little clutches in it, the most common one is the shift motor itself, they just quit working and have to be replaced, next is wiring issues, so if your having problems with it shifting the motor is the first thing to start with.
