1970 F-250

Asked by Ford_Girl444 Feb 10, 2018 at 08:51 PM about the 1970 Ford F-250

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I am so frustrated with how finicky the
truck is when trying to start. It turns over
(new, strong battery) but after about 2
minutes, it peters out and won't restart.
Gas in both tanks. Gas in auxiliary tank is 4
weeks old and sat. The guy who sold me
truck mentioned toggle on floor (to switch
tanks) didn't work. I have had some luck in
the past with switching the toggle from
main to off. Fuel gage doesn't register for
either tank. So frustrated. :(

fuel pump's on the motor right , mechanical ? check all the lines , the pump may be sucking air , it's 45 years old there may be a lot of upgrades needed

I have a 1970 F250 thats floods very easily if not started with the standard two pumps on the gas petal. I think these ancient engineers designed the carbs with a rubber diaphram inside the accelerator to kind of act as a "pre-pump" until the mechanical (not electric which delivers fuel more instantaniuosly) fuel pump can push fuel to the carb. But I have found that one pump is not enough and three is too much.
