1981 f150 4x4 auto - Noise or whine coming from trans/transfer case area, sounds similar to a manual when left in granny gear.. Transmission shifts fine and high and low range works as well but the faster you go the louder the noise.

have you check fluid level in both..possible sound might be the front pump.
