1983 s10 2.8l v6

Asked by Chris Jul 12, 2018 at 10:10 PM about the 1983 Chevrolet S-10

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1983 Chevy s10 with the 2.8l v6. I went to start it
after not driving it for a few weeks and it started up. I let it
run for a few and i went back inside. I go back out about an
hr later and it wont start, it turns over but no start. Ive
checked for spark with the screwdriver trick and i checked
all the vacuum lines and they all seem to be intact. I can
also see and smell gas in the carb, any thoughts?

The Ignition control module within the distributor could have given up the ghost and be timing spark wrong, I doubt auto parts stores still have the equipment to test them but a reputable auto electric outfit should. What color is the spark? White/blue is good, yellow/orange is weak. Also a compression test would tell you if your timing chain has jumped a tooth or two.

Spark is orange red-ish, i plan on replacing the ignition coil and distributor. if its not a timing chain issue do you think those parts new should fix my problem?

I bet you'll drop that in and it'll fire up as long as you install it correctly with the proper procedure. It's actually really easy to do even with basic mechanical skills and knowledge, if you're unsure and want advice I check CG periodically

I mentioned the timing chain as a worst case scenario and next thing to check BUT your spark sucks so no doubt it wont start and you're taking the next step and replacing the distributor which i think is a great move, they're not very exspensive and is good insurance for down the road. Speaking of down the road.... try replacinging JUST the coil first to see of it solves it on it's own, if it does i would still replace the distributor and keep the old one as a known working spare. I still have parts for cars I dont own anymore (like first gen s10 headlight bezels and tail lights) so maybe im just an automotive horder!
