1979 suburban keys suddenly not working

Asked by Guru9KW8M Jul 10, 2017 at 11:26 AM about the 1979 Chevrolet Suburban

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Went to get in vehicle this morning, and the key
won't unlock the door. Finally climbed in through
the unlocked back and the key will turn in the
ignition but nothing happens with the engine. It's
silent. Last drove it the day before yesterday
without a problem. What's going On?

the two are unrelated , give the lock a shot of de-icer , is the batt. good and charged ? are the terminals clean and tight ? Will it start with a jump ?

In az and it was high 80s this morning so the lock is not iced shut, any other idea what would cause this problem? Will try to jump it after work today. Is there such thing as a security feature where the car won't start without the door being unlocked first? That's the only thing I could think of.

is the key well worn ? you can lube a lock with graphite or better is an expensive white lube to be used in SMALL amounts , the two should not be mixed , I've heard de-icer has a small amount of the former that is left behind , I wouldn't think a 79 has security features like that
