were the 1988 monte carlo 305 V8 a reliable good car ...reliable engine and
transmission???

Lmao HELL NO! those are what you call modern muscle fail. The 305s are shitty motors yes there a small block but they have no power. The diffs are nice an pending on you tranny, if your running on a turbo 350 it will be fine but if you want speed this is not the car. People usually over price these vehicles since there popular now a days. Listen if u wanna spend 5000 on a car you could prbly find a nice pre 75 muscle car for the same price that ull pay for this so if you have thousands of dollars to put into it then build it but please 80s muscle sucks

yes,they were a good car,but youre asking about a car over 20 years old,main thing is maintance.

Depends on maintenence - If oil is not changed often enough in the 305 engine the valve seals will get hard. This causes a puff of blue smoke at first start up then goes away. The trans 200R4 is okay but recommend a shift kit to firm up the shift and trns fluid changes every 15k NOT 30k and make sure who ever does it flushed the cooler in the radiator each time. Good luck
