A 350 will work. All you need is the bolt on engine mounts.

I've had a "66 Impala SS 396 convertible for thirty years. An alternative for the 396 is the 427. You could modify the engine mounts for a mouse motor from that period. But you have to check the mounts for any block you consider because they differ from later years.

im looking to put a sbc in due to budget , im having trouble finding an affordable 427 and all the 396 i come across are missing components

Lets see, a 1996 Impala and "affordable." You probably won't find anything complete; there are engines available, but they need rebuilding. Find a Chevy club; there are always guys who have stuff lying around or advice where the get stuff.
