Fuel pump on a Toyota Camry 91

Asked by Corry Aug 26, 2016 at 03:41 PM about the 1991 Toyota Camry

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I took my 91 Camry to the mechanic. He
said he took out back seat and he could
not get to fuel pump. He says he will have
to drop the tank and he will not do it   I saw
other people doing it through there in
video. Is it a difficult job

you could bypass the original pump and fit it inline in the gas system and re-wire to suit, a local shop may charge around $130

The mechanic told me he would not do it because he had to drop tank other mechanic says 750.00

The last time I was involved in a fuel pump replacement AND had to drop the gas tank to complete the job...the bill was about $500.00....Parts and labor. Suggest you get on the phone and shop around. Good Luck.

I just checked NAPA on line parts store. A fuel pump kit for this vehicle is about $150.00-$250.00....NOT including the sending unit. If your gas gauge is working properly....you should not need to replace a $500.000 pump AND sending unit assembly. Suggest you find out exactly what will be replaced. Just the Pump...or....the complete pump and sending unit assembly. Get back to us with result.

The pump and strainer and filter is what he said. The gas gauge works fine

Ok....so considering one will have to drop the Gas Tank to complete this repair....a bill of around $500.00 sounds reasonable to me. Did you perhaps ask what he will be charging for labor. what is his "hourly labor Rate"? This is usually about a 2-3 hour job.

Corinne...here is something interesting. Google...."Napa Autocare Car and Auto Repair Estimator" Se what you think about that estimate you received.

Shops hate working on nasty old cars (RUST) so the flat rate isn't going to apply. Really most shops will turn this away vehicles older than 10 yrs. If the car is super clean you live in an arid climate then that's a game changer.
