What does it mean if you put your car in drive or reverse it won't go it just revs up?

Asked by Ginat0909 Oct 04, 2015 at 02:43 PM about the 1994 Toyota Camry

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I was leaving work and as I was driving through the parking lot it wouldn't go
it just revs up. It does it in drive and reverse. I waited a few minutes and it
drove enough for me to get close to a parking spot and I just coasted in the
spot. I checked my fluids and they are good. My friend towed me home and
he looked thinking it was the shifter cable but he said it wasn't that. What else
could it be?

your automobile has had it, sounds like your torque converter. how many miles has your automobile done and do you drive it hard, eg engage reverse or park while still in forward motion?

It has about 160,000 miles on it. I don't drive it hard. I've had it for a few years and only had basic things wrong like battery and alternator. It was driving fine on my way to work and then it just happened.

I would say its your torque converter, you have had it for a few years so you don't really know its history, if you know the gearbox oil and filters have been changed at the correct times in the automobiles life then I would say definitely the torque converter, these suffer when mistreated like as mentioned earlier you may as well replace the whole gearbox or just buy a new automobile
