where is the shift linkage cable at on a 1996 toyota camry

One end is attached to the Transmission..... under hood front left driver side area. Other end is located in Console next to Shift Lever.....not an easy job for the DIY. Consider a Video google search of your Make/Model/Year.,,,before you attempt replacement.
