97 camry coolant leaking but can't find exact source or why

Asked by David Oct 09, 2017 at 07:33 PM about the 1997 Toyota Camry

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 97 camry and i noticed coolant leaking under passenger side of the
engine. I was hoping to find a hose with a hole that i could replace, as i have
done in the past, but i can only follow the leak back so far.

The best way i can describe the location of where the leak is falling is if you
are standing in front of the car looking at the engine, the alternator is on the
left side and it is coming from behind and under that area, like a foot down
from the alternator and then a foot straight back. There are no hoses there,
but the best i could do trying to trace it  back up to the source is just on nuts
and bolts that are kind of at the back and bottom of those belts, seemed like
a metal housing or enclosure of some kind, sorry i do not know much about
cars.

While researching the problem, i was given some tests to do to test the water
pump. I took the radiator cap off, started the card and let it run for 20 minutes
to get to operating temperature. there was almost no fluid in there to begin
with, and when i came back after 20 min it was completely empty. i started
over and poured water directly into the radiator until it was full first and then
started the car. after just a few minutes i saw the fluid moving from the
radiator through the upper radiator hose, into the engine.

If anyone has any idea what the problem may be or where the fluid might be
coming from, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Indeed...does sound like a bad water pump. Next step is to have a technician perform a pressure test on the cooling system. This will allow the leak to be observed without running the engine. Let us know the result.
