As I recall..... the Black connector part sits vertically on top of the Tranny. You will have to do some careful digging under the hood to find it. Do a Google search of your Make/Model/Year and Vehicle Speed Sensor. There should be some pictures and Videos on the location.

Are both the speedometer and odometer not workng? if they aren't, the usual suspect is the VSS(vehicle speed sensor). If this sensor is good, then I would look at the blue, 3 lead resonator soldered on the speedometer circuit board. You have to remove the instrument cluster(easy) to get at it. Then remove the speedometer assembly and identify the blue resonator. Unsolder the 3 leads and solder in the new resonator(available from DigiKey.com for 70 cents). Reassemble the instrument cluster and reinstall it. Good luck!!

An e-mail is on the way to Car Gurus. The part No. is DigiKey ZTT-4.00MG/X902-ND/82182. If you look on Youtube for a 1998 Camry speedometer/odometer malfunction, there are videos to help you locate the VSS, remove the instrument cluster and replace the resonator. Good luck.

One additional thought. My Camry is a stick shift, so it doesn't use the VSS output for transmission shifting. The automatic transmissions do! Without the VSS output, the car will shift irradically.

The resonator(3 lead blue) was purchased from DigiKey:part No. ZTT-4.00MG/X902-ND/82182. I cannot take credit for this fix as a fellow named James on a Car Guru's thread(1998 Camry speedometer/odometer malfunction)was the initial genius.. Another fellow on the thread identified the the DIgiKey part and I just followed instructions and it solved my problem. A plus in installing a new resonator is the fact that you a getting a new product, not a used resonator that may have its own age problems. Prolonged heat deteriorates the ceramic resonator(my Camry is a 1998 and sits in the Florida sun). Buying a used instrument cluster or speedometer is a risk plus it changes your odometer milage.

Ok...just to clarify. If one of these older Toyota's has a Speedo going nuts...AND....the Auto Tranny is shifting crazy.....and...the odometer is not working...the root cause of the issue is most likely the VSS. On the other hand...if just the Speedo Meter is nuts...and ODometer and Tranny work fine it's most likely this "resonator". Correct?

If the odometer is working, I doubt that it is the resonator. Both the odometer and speedometer were not working on my car. The VSS was functional(tested at PepBoys). Replacing the resonator fixed both meters. The VSS is located on top of the tranny close to the block on the driver side. It has a black(?) connector on top and one 10 mm bolt holding the VSS. It can be accessed from the top, but not without angst. My vehicle is a 98 Camry CE std stick. Let me know how you make out.

OK...I think I got it. Thanks, Now...Seth...have you found the VSS on the Tranny?

Photo #2....I see 3 electrical connectors. One is white...long and flat. Then there are 2 more which appear to be black. They look like 2 wire sensors. One..or...both may be your VSS. Suggestion go to a parts store and have them show you a replacement VSS for your make model year. Buy it...take it back to your vehicle and see if the black connector matches up with your vehicle. Get back with results.

when i open the black connector on the right in photo 2,i see just two cables that go inside the gearbox and they are atatched to the connector

Ok....now if we had an accurate picture of the speed sensor in question...then we could determine which sensor might be bad. If you go back and read the other commentors in tjis thread....you might notice that your problem might be a bad Speedo Cluster. So....lets confirm your Make Model Year...and......what the issue is...And...what codes are set in this vehicles computer..

Hello everyone,am new here but I just want to clarify on something.....I think Setlhodi's car is a Camry '98 2.2L SXV, I have a similar one at my workshop with the same problem, the tranny doesn't have any other electrical connections apart from the 3 you can see under the battery mounting, the 2 pin socket I guess is for the tranny valve body solenoids, next is the long flat one which is for the PNP safety switch/inhibitor or PRNDL gear lever position display, next is the single pin socket behind the inhibitor switch, I guess that's for the O/D electrical solenoid/valve......my conclusion is that some of this car use ABS wheel speed sensors of all four wheels to the ABS Control module then from there signals are sent to the ECU/PCM which now monitors the changing of gears as the same PCM/ECU sends signal to the speedometer/odometer,so first check if the abs module is functioning well as for my case the ABS module is dead I am not able to scan/retrieve any error codes from it as it displays on my scanner that ABS NOT EQUIPPED yet it is equipped,so guys my Camry doesn't have a VSS on the tranny, I hope this helps, thanks .....George
