Why does my 1991 chevy k1500 shift into gear but only moves barely inches when rpms are high

Has fluid. Could it be the pump? if so would it be better to replace whole tranny? Also, 4wd sounds like it doesnt lock in. Has a loud grinding noise when theres pressure on the front end. Would that be transfer case?
