Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Ok guys big issue I'm having here is I have
a 97 k1500 5.7 I've done everything by the
book on setting this distributor bring it up
top on number one set my button on
number one plug which corresponds with
the v8 mark as well still pops and carries
on when she runs tried a relearn for the
retard with no avail the motor has been
changed before it came to us it was
originally a 5.0 to the truck and was
changed to a newer model 5.7 not exactly
sure what year but if I change the info on
my scanner to a 99 I get the option to set it
through the scanner but as I go into the
function my communication get interrupted
and I cannot go through the steps so I'm
kinda at a loss of what to do I've even
checked the chain and with my dots lined
up on the gears and number one being up
my button showed 180 off and this is dot
to dot btw on timing (just trying to be
thorough) so I corrected the button and
now it backfires when you crank so clearly
there is an issue I'm overlooking any help
would be much appreciated

Do you have the firing order correct and the plug wires placed correctly on the distributor cap?

A real detective story when someone has changed everything around, Treat it (5.7?) as if everything is mismatched and wrong, from timing chain, to firing order to engine size and year to PCM etc you get the idea.Big clue why is the scanner losing communication too..Timing chain OFF 180* Fast check set the firing order to cylinder #1 at TDC with distributor rotor pointing at cap tower When the #1 cylinder is at TDC .. Connect number 1 wire and continue with correct firing order 5.7 ? NEXT, in the correct rotational direction install the remaining plug wires.. POST again after this attempt.

5.0 and 5.7 firing order is the same.

Firing order is all correct have even went as far as swapping out everything on distributor... shaft button pickup cap and nothing changes also previous to coming in the truck had new plugs and wires didn't see any issues other than one plug was cross threaded so I replaced that but everything as far as that goes is correct in firing order and so on

I read somewhere that the static timing needs to be with in 10 degrees for the computer to begin adjusting the timing. Has this engine / computer combo ran in the past?

Yes supposedly this is only a 4-5 year old crate engine ... Personally from what I see I'm not seeing that being the case but anyways originally come in thinking it was a fuel pump bc it was ran out of fuel when the issue started discovered that the fuel pressure regulator was bad causing it to run rich replaced the upper/lower intake and drivers side head gasket(due to a nut falling into the intake port.. Oops lol) arms were adjusted properly but like I said it just seems to be running like it's not in time on the firing keep having cam/crank correlation code come back immediately even tried a crank sensor to no avail no longer runs rich and plugs are not fouled so I'm just at a loss of where I should go and I'm not one to make guess repairs

UPDATE! So when I replaced the fuel regulator I unknowingly brought out an underlying issue .. When the fuel back feeds off the injectors a leak was in three of the eight lines feeding the injectors on the spider .. So with that being corrected the truck ran well enough to actually time the distributor and I was indeed a tooth off but now all is good

Happy to read that issue was resolved. What I needed to keep working on my timing/starting/running problem I'm dealing w/ on my 92 K1500 Blazer.I can postpone pouring gas all over it and throwing a match on it.!! (for now)
