1998 gmc 3500 will any short block fit?

Asked by Sep 06, 2016 at 06:41 PM about the 1998 Chevrolet C/K 3500

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

1998 gmc 454. Motor siezed up. Need to replace
the short block but I can't find one. Can I use an
older style out of say a 70s model truck.

The 70's blocks were not as good as the 98 blocks are, I find it hard to believe that you can't find one, how about a complete engine from a wrecking yard? Most of them come with a parts only warranty, might be a cheaper way to go, than just replacing the short block.

But are they interchangeable?

I doubt it will cause the engine you now have is a Vortec 454 that was released in 1995. 1970 was the first year for the 454 engine, and the next year it was detuned for emissions. If you want to read more, http://wikicars.org/en/Chevrolet_454_engine
