honda crv 1996 runs perfectly but at times the thermostat shoots up and the engine seems to get quite hot, but not all of the time any ideas what cou;d be wrong

possible the fans are not coming on when the temperature is reached. check the sensor, check the water level in the overflow tank. check the cap
