Could be hundred different things, we'd only be guessing what the problem is. Since the light is on you will need to scan the car for the 4 digit codes that are stored in the cars memory. Find a local auto parts store in your area, they can scan it for free, an post the codes back here, ex, P0301

Have it read for codes, even if the check engine light is NOT on the computer will have stored information and codes. Discount auto stores will read codes for no fee. write them down. Should be simple fix.

Code is P0171-fuel injection system too lean. Bank 1. I went to engine-codes.com and looked it up. It gave a whole list of possibilities. I'm thinking the oxygen sensor may be bad. Any other ideas will be appreciated!
