My friends hhr started smoking from a long trip she made
and her antifreeze was all on the ground when she came
back out of the store... But her car isn't over heating what
could this be?

Without coolant, I assure you, the car is overheating, or you saw the puddle of coolant in time to shut the car off before the engine overheated. Obviously, something let go; maybe the water pump, radiator, or a hose, Or maybe some jack-ass vandalized the radiator in the parking lot.
