THEY ARE CALLED MUSTANGS BECAUSE OF THE WILD HORSE ASSOCIATED TO THE WILD WEST OF MANY YEARS AGO FORD THOUGHT OF THIS NAME BECAUSE IT MATCHED THE CAR AND THEY PUT THE EMBLEM ON THEM.

wrong... the mustang was actually named after a fighter plane called a *mustang* from the wars

Right and I guess that's why we see a Fighter Plane emblem on our cars! Vinve204 is correct, the name Mustang was inspired by the wild horses that roam the western states.

Executive stylist John Najjar, who was a fan of the World War II P-51 Mustang fighter plane, suggested the name. The pony car is a class of automobile launched and inspired by the Ford Mustang in 1964. It describes an affordable, compact, highly styled car with a sporty or performance-oriented image. this is why there is a horse on the grill

Actually you are all right lol. The name was originally chosen to honor the Mustang P51 fighter plane of WWII. They then changed the emblem to the running horse because it appealed to more age ranges and consequently more potential buyers. Ford implemented the running horse in order to attract customers, both young and old, to the sporty car by applying a logo which would catch the interest of all observers. The Mustang Horse was a better fit than a fighter plane, and is now one of the most recognizable car emblems ever.

I didnt know the name of the guy who came up with the name. I did know that they had a contest to choose the name and that the guy who came up with mustang named it for the P-51

ever one is correct. In initials designs for the car that Ford wanted there were some concepts that had Cougar gracing the grill of the car and not a horse that so happily sits there today. This of course led to the Mercury Cougar in later years.

because Lee Iacocca and others involved came up with a few names 1.couger (later on they came up with another car from there mercury division)and 2. mustang and a few others.it was going to be called a couger untell Lee Iacocca became progect manager so Lee iacocca saved ford

the mustang fighter is name after the horse. when suggesting a mustang fighter idea, you are suggesting the unique American Western horse, same as when suggesting it be from a horse. have to say this again, the fighter is named after the American Western horse. Additionally, the emblem is intentionally left running, NOT RIGHT. Freedom, excitement, bravery, and wildness moves left. Yes, there was some prototype emblems going right, but they were never sold to the public. The mustang is the iconic image of a new generation that was engaged in the love of living, sunshine, freedom, burning some tires, for the young and young of heart. Always like the wild mustangs.
