GT/CS and Shelby

Asked by Seth Sep 16, 2009 at 12:08 AM about the 2007 Ford Mustang

Question type: General

So, back in '68 when Carroll Shelby designed the GT500 and the California Special as well as the High Mountain
Special... and now (well 2007 to be exact) does the California Special still fall under Shelby? or is it all Ford? Same
with the GT500? Is that all ford? Or Shelby? so confusing. I have Shelby on my CS and I dont want to make an ass
outta myself, if the California Special doesnt fall under the Shelby Automotives category i wont take off the Shelby
stuff, it looks awesome, I just want to know.

No. The new one is not a Shelby product. The original one was not an actual Shelby either, but was "inspired by the gt500" and built by Ford. The 2007-2009 GT500's were "Real" Shelby's; he took regular production mustangs and modified them at his shop in Nevada. 2010 GT500's are all made alongside regular Mustangs at the Dearborn plant, but are still "Shelby" cars because he designed them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Special_Mustang

by the way, it was in 1966 that the "67" gt 500 came out, and in 67, the "68 california special was a ford licensed product. all SHELBY cars are shelby but the new shelbys are incoherence with ford svt (special vehicles team) and shelby automotive.

That is correct. The California Specials were Ford Mustangs that had cosmetic changes borrowed from the Shelby cars. There was also a Denver version.
