1966 chevelle won't crank
I just got a 1966 chevelle it was running fine i took it out the other day and as i
was stopped it just shut off, tried to start it and won't even turn over. Also my
headlight won't come on and the little clock on the dash stopped working, so
obviously its not getting power i just don't know what to check. I bought a new
battery and still no change any ideas of what to check? I can check the starter
but would that affect the lights and clock?? little confused and in need of help.
A catastrophic failure like this is going to be at the battery or battery related. Check your battery cable connections at the battery and at the starter. Is this car original or has it been modified? Check your connections at the alternator as well. HTH. -Jim
Be sure that where the negative (-) battery cable bolts to the chassis is clean and tight. You may have to relocate it. HTH. -Jim
has been modified, it was a old drag car so battery has been relocated to the trunk. Ground seems to be tight down. I will have to check the starter connection, that was my original thought but wasn't sure.
Also would a bad connection at the starter affect the light and clock?
Definitely. Power comes into the car from the battery at the starter. So a bad connection there can kill everything. HTH. -Jim
Believe i found the problem, one of the wires to the starter was touching the exhaust and melted the wire through. gonna put a new wire in and see if it works.
Ah, good work! Sounds like it could be the trouble! Double check your fuses and fuseable links as well. May have blown one. HTH. - Jim
Got the wire replaced and it started right up, thanks for the help.
Awesome!! You're welcome. Glad to help. Thanks for letting us know!! -Jim
It's great when the problem turns out to be something simple.
