what could cause the trunk/hatch motor to continue to run

the trunk/hatch motor continued to run after closing the lid. it latched,but the motor kept running. we released the latch button several times, finally unhooked the car battery to get it to shut off.

I have this same problem. Mine is on a 1991 Camaro. How do you fix it? Is the latch motor going out?
