what goes wrong that the gas cap needs replaced

the gas caps commonly suffer from gas expansion causing excessive pressure to build up within the tank, which in turn will damage the gas cap. The gas cap seals may also wear in hot weather. as a precaution I would look at replacing the entire gas system due to the age of this automobile
