Can someone identify this mystery part in a 1997 Subaru Outback?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I've just bought a 1997 Subaru Outback and it's missing a part, which I cannot identify. The car seems to run fine but I know there should be a part, that might be related to the air cleaner, that is missing in the engine compartment.

Here is a photo of the part, from an Outback that has the part installed:

Does anyone know what it is called and what it is for?

I beleive the part you have identified is the induction hose / pipe. a plastic shaped tube that helps funnel air into the Air Filter housing, with this part missing you are not gaining the 'Ram air' effect it is designed to give. You should be able to pick up a replacement quite cheaply from the dealer.
