the battery light came on car was running but lights went out . Checked the battery fuild it was low. add water..not sure if i should have and had someone jump start it and everything ran for a few min and lights. Then the car died. should I go buy a new battery or is it something else wrong?

Sounds like a battery and possibly an alternator. The battery light comes on when the alternator isn't putting out enough current. Have them both checked.
