Dash lights flickering, Cut on Headlights car shut down

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hello, just purchased my son (college) a 2002 Audi A6, ran just fine over a
month.  He is stating that dash lights are flickering, and when he cut on
head lights the engine completely shut down.  He let it sit for a minute - car
started right up.  Windows 1/4 way down and will not go up since this
happened.  Auto Zone tested and cannot find anything wrong with the
starter, alternator, or battery.  Where do I go from here.

The car most likely has a grounding issue that is causing the electrical malfunctions. Take it to a reputable mechanic or the Audi dealer to get an accurate diagnosis. Electrical work is some of the most time consuming and therefore expensive work to do on a vehicle given that most shops are close to $100/hr for labor (to even find the problem). Old used German cars are a money pit. I would fix the problem and dump the car. Get him something more reliable like an older honda or toyota.

Agree with pervious response. Was the car a salvage flood title in its history? Look for water damage by lifting up carpets. Sounds like either water damage or the ECU harness was handled during a repair. If any of the drains from sunroof were blocked up or battery compartment has water then you may solve by drying it out and cleaning up. The engine shouldn't shut down if the issue was only headlight related.
