2000 Pont Grand Prix has trac lt button, what does it do or control?

That's for the traction control system. If you push the button the "Trac Off " indicator will come on telling you the traction control system is turned off. HTH. -Jim

so does it control the actual traction or is it something to do with the brakes?

The traction control system and the anti-lock brake system work together. The traction control system can limit engine speed to prevent you from accelerating in a skid condition. It can also activate the anti-lock brakes to help you regain control in a skid condition. HTH. -Jim
