Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Ok so i need someones opinion i have 2003 pontiac
grand prix se it has a the 3.1 engine in it. When i
purchased the car i had no problems at all. The car
itself has over 300xxx miles on it but its on a
second engine. Me and a couple buddies were out
riding around one night when the temp light came
on (keep in mind the temp gauge does not work)
and the car started steaming. I stopped and checked
it the top radiator hose had swelled and exsploded. I
got a new hose and installed it refilled the radiator
bled it out car continued to get hot and started
swelling the new hose. So being around cars that
told me bad thermostat. I got a new one changed it
and bled and bled repetedly using 4 gallons of
antifreeze. The heat and everything was working
great for a few days and then out of the blue the
heat quit and temp light came back on. So i bled the
system once again. I have bled many of times to be
specific. I put a pressure test on it yesterday gauge
never dropped till i opened the thermostat housing
bleeder. I refilled the reserve and radiator drove
around town all day no problems at all. Started for
my weekly cape missouri drive got on the interstate
temp light comes on heat quits and you can see
steaming coming out from behind the car at 70
mph. Less than a quarter mile light goes off but still
no heat. At the next point i could stop i opened the
bleeders and a bunch more air comes out. Anyone
have any idea how im still getting air in the system
and there is no visible leaks anywhere?

Blown head gasket or cracked cylinder head, your getting combustion gasses in the cooling system, eventually you will start to notice either coolant in the oil or oil in the coolant, you may also notice a slight engine miss on intial start up that will go away within a short period of time. A simple block check test can confirm this.

Yes, blown head gasket. The 3.1 is notorious for that. HTH. -Jim
