Clean the shifter area and make sure the shifter is fully in the park position. Try adjusting the DTRS. Or it could be a bad lock cylinder.

Azteks are known for the ignition sensor going out. This sensor tells the car that its in park. If it doesn't get the signal, it won't let you turn the key all the way back and release the key. You can over ride this. Beneath the ignition under the steering column is a rubber button / cap. Pop it off. Push a small diametered dowel or anything else which fits into the hole. You will feel it push a button inside the steering column. While you have the button pressed, turn and remove the key.

Thomas your answer was very very helpful ... My 2001 aztek started doing this, but only when I drove it... It wouldn't happen when anyone else drove it ... Lol... Even mechanics couldn't get it to mess up ... But this helped a lot , so I know what to look for and know what to do to get it to release the key

Try adjusting DTRS? What is DTRS? Where is it located? As for ignition sensor, I can’t find the sensor any where. What is the part number? Where is located on 2005 Pontiac Aztec.

Try adjusting the steering wheel position. For some reason it worked for me.
