Temperature gauge problem

My 2004 pontiac grand am 4 cylinder temperature gauge wont go to the 200 degrees.
It tops out around the first line above the 100 line...any advice?
I just replaced the thermostat too.

Try and put a new engine coolant temperature sensor and see if that works.
I am in the same boat RIGHT now! Frustrating! We took it in and there is a 2 piece part for the 'coolant sensor', which we had the cheaper one replaced. It worked, heater blew hot for all of THREE days. Then, check engine light came on again, heater was cool and temp gauge was only ! 100. Took it back in, thinking we would now have to put the other part on, only to be told that it was the thermostat. They got that on, but was now leaking coolant. Pulled it all apart to put a second thermostat on and ripped a gasket. That 's on them. Husband is still there, at 2:30, and took the car in at 9 this morning. They are still working. HOPEFULLY, this will end these issues. As soon as we possibly can, we are junking GM and going foreign - for the first time in our lives! I am so tired of the crap that is passed of as quality!
GM cars can last for a long time but if you are not a mechanic go with a foreign car better off parts last longer but they quite expensive in cases when the engine light comes up don't drive for a long time because your creating more issues
