Misfiring causes raw gas to enter the exhaust system and it burns inside the catalytic converter; destroying it. Your problem sounds like that has happened, and you now need to replace the converters. Another possibility might be if you also have a check engine light on your dash your car has gone into limp/safety mode: the engine is locked down as a safety measure and will not operate normally until repairs are done.
