Battery damaged via overcharging alternator

Asked by May 17, 2016 at 07:50 PM about the 2005 Pontiac Montana SV6

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The alternator I bought from an auto parts
store overcharged the battery. Thankful
that  I was able to exchanged alternator via
the life time warranty. However, the
overcharging alternator ruined the battery.
Is there compensation for having to buy a
new battery?

You should have checked the voltage output on the bad alternator in my opinion. I think it's on you and not the parts store.

Hmmm... On me?! The Mechanic did check that and gave me a number. I'll have to ask him again. what difference would that make?

Good mechanic always checks the output voltage when replacing an alternator. If he didn't and the alternator was bad when it was installed, I would think he owes you a battery not the parts store.

It was a lifetime warranty alternator that went out a year after installation. So maybe the voltage output was good at the time?
